Meet an image upload limit

A form may accept only an image below 200 KB even when the photo looks small on screen. KB measures the encoded file, not its displayed width. Toolkatsu searches for a smaller encoding and, if necessary, reduces pixel dimensions to meet the target.

Example: a 200 KB upload limit

  1. Check the destination’s accepted formats and minimum pixel dimensions first.
  2. Choose Compress, select your image, and enter 200 in the KB field.
  3. Run the tool and compare the result dimensions and file size.
  4. Download and inspect small text, faces and edges before uploading it.

Toolkatsu uses decimal units: 200 KB means 200,000 bytes. The downloaded size can be below, rather than exactly equal to, the target. An original already below the target is returned unchanged.

Why did the extension change?

When re-encoding for compression, JPG stays JPG, while PNG and WebP use WebP. If the destination accepts only JPG, use Convert on the original to make a JPG, download it, then select that JPG in Compress. Converting after compression can increase the file size again.

When a result is not suitable

Very low targets may make text unreadable or dimensions too small. Increase the target if allowed. If the destination requires fixed dimensions as well as a strict size limit, check both after compression; this version has no dimension-lock option in Compress. An enlargement cannot recover lost detail.
